Malaspina Art Society is co-sponsoring the planned What the Plus + Group Exhibition and Festival this summer 2021 in Powell River and we are looking for especially qathet region/Coastal BCLGBTQ2S+ artists interested in producing up to 3 NEW works on our ‘Creative Self Portrait’ theme in any media, and/or less formal works on the same theme (e.g. writing of all kinds, photography, illustrations, cartoons) with corresponding online content for our Q(uee)R Zine! DEADLINE to express interest is APRIL 15, 2021 (deadline to submit actual work will be mid-July, 2021).
The Art Centre Powell River Public Art Gallery will be extending the Memento Mori Exhibition (to Dec 5, see hours above) due to the current Public Health order for COVID 19, that expires on November 23. Memento Mori is a collective community expression honouring grief, loss and transitions between life and death. There will be a community installation of masks, music, writing and an ofrenda (altar) to honour deceased loved ones. Please bring a photo or memento for the ofrenda, a mask, or a writing submission for ‘Death Together’. View the virtual component of all events on our You tube channel and our website.

Although LBGQT2 stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, Queer/Questioning and 2-Spirited, the plus (+) that is usually included after the initialism encompasses a list of other identities that fall under the queer umbrella. Our group art exhibition features 17 local artists ranging in age from 12 to 65+, working in various media, focusing on the ‘+’ itself, as it indicates a range or ‘gradient’, representing the fluid spectrum of human gender and sexuality.
